Abstract:

The road transport sector, particularly in Latin America and the Caribbean, significantly contributes to global energy-related emissions through vehicles with Internal Combustion Engines (ICE). Transitioning to low-carbon urban mobility is vital, with Battery-electric buses (BEB) offering a promising solution, especially in Latin American cities where they are the primary mode of public transport. However, BEB adoption remains limited, with Chinese dominance posing a challenge to the Brazilian bus industry. This study examines the capabilities of Brazilian electric bus companies and their impact on national and regional markets. Findings suggest Brazil's industrial infrastructure could support BEB development. Developing technological, productive, organizational, and commercial capabilities could accelerate the transition to electric mobility, benefiting Brazil and the region.
