Abstract:

Electric vehicles (EVs) are recommended to be produced and used against the background of green transformation. This paper studies the trend of global EVs export and China’s role by focusing on four HS 6-digit codes, namely HS 870124 (Road tractors for semi-trailers with only electric motor for propulsion), HS 870240 (Motor vehicles for the transport of >= 10 persons with only electric motor for propulsion), HS 870380 (Motor cars and other motor vehicles principally designed for the transport of <10 persons, including station wagons and racing cars, with only electric motor for propulsion), and HS 870460 (Motor vehicles for the transport of goods with only electric motor as motor for propulsion). It finds that China ranked as Top 3 exporter of EVs during the period from 2022-2024, while Germany, Korea, Japan, United States of America, France, Poland, Türkiye, Sweden and Belgium also had advantages in global export of different EVs. There was obvious intra-industry trade in global EV industry. Many developing countries, such as Thailand and Mexico, ranked as Top 10 importer of Chinese EVs during the same period. With the guidance of decarbonization policy and development of technology, global EV export may enter an era of high-speed growth, and China has the chance to enlarge its advantage in EV export.
