Gerpisa colloquium, Shanghai (2025)Abstract:
Three years before, I presented “Is BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) the only solution?” at GERPISA Colloquium. My conclusion at that time was:
BEV is prospective technology in the next generation automotive industry; however, it still has many problems to solve. Thus, including Myanmar and Thailand, there are many countries where BEV may not be the best choice. Instead of adhere BEV, multiple options must be permitted as far as they comply with carbon-neutral.
Since then, Thai government has continued with their BEV centric policy. Coupled with the ACFTA (ASEAN-China FTA), Chinese manufacturers gradually raise their market share in Thailand. On the other hands, presence of Japanese manufacturers in Thailand is shrinking, however still maintain their market share around 80% (Down from around 90%). One of the main reasons maybe the popularity of xEV, especially HEV and PHEV which Toyota has competitive advantage.
In this presentation, I will try to describe the current situation and future of automotive industry in Thailand where may be the epitome of advanced developing nation. Through this discussion, I would like to raise the question “Is BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) the only solution?” once again.
