Traditional ways of mobility, mainly based on Internal Combustion Engines Vehicles (ICEV´s), are contributing to rapid climate change. Actual trends to mitigate these effects and to contribute to a transition to a low carbon economy, point towards electrification. Electric Vehicles (EV´s) are a key to success, nevertheless, the pathway to market domination, will challenge the traditional business practices of the established auto industry and other new players, that have previously operated isolated from each other. At this early stage, viable Business Models (BM´s) for EV´s have yet to be determined at the intersection between the traditional auto industry, the charging infrastructure, and its integration into the electricity sector. Since industry boundaries are being crossed, EV´s innovation interface must now be addressed in an ecosystem logic, where value chains are reconfiguring into value ecosystems, and where participants of the developing EV business ecosystem are compelled to innovate their existing business models to address the new forces emerging from technology improvements, change in user´s expectations, and climate and energy policies. Therefore, business models for EV´s need to be analyzed throw the lens of its ecosystem to define the way that a network of stakeholders co-create and co-capture value. This paper aims to define an approach for Business Model Innovation (BMI), considering the changing dynamics and the interconnected nature of the EV ecosystem. To do so, a BMI framework is presented considering the interactions of value resulting from introducing innovation concepts such as servitization and business ecosystem, underlined by its complexity, the multiparty interdependence, and the alignment of the stakeholders, to define a strategy for value creation and value capture under this paradigm.
