The Brazilian automotive industry has been facing several and important changes in its products, processes and services since the 90’s, which brought considerable improvements in its supply chain. In this sense, this paper identifies and analyses the common and specific features in locally developed automobiles that brought competitive advantages in new product development (NPD) in the Brazilian automotive industry. This work is basis for a theoretical framework regarding the main characteristics that influence car makers’ success in the country. Through a theoretical study based on various sources, it was possible to find out that common aspects such as local R&D centers, modularity strategy and tax policies as well as specific features like product redesign or a new market segment creation are the main aspects which brought benefits both to OEMs and their customers.
