Résumé:

The article examines the change in automation strategies in the German, Japanese and American automotive industry from the 1990s to the present. It reconstructs the developments from the automation debates of the 1990s to the current debate on digitization and discusses differences between the companies in the three countries. The analysis of automation strategies is combined with an analysis of the change in occupational structures. The paper is based on an analysis of data from the International Robotics Federation, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Statistical Office of Japan and the German Federal Employment Agency.
