Résumé:

One of the key issues concerning the role of transnational corporations in the host economies is their impact on the development of domestic enterprises. This is particularly the case in the emerging economies, including Central Europe. The automotive industry has become a major sector here in the last decades due to the massive investment of foreign companies and the extensive complex supply network. On the one hand, there is a growing number of producers, both OEMs and especially component manufacturers, as well as their attempts to increase the local content, which may facilitate the inclusion of indigenous firms in the supply chains. On the other, the requirements and expectations of large automotive foreign producers, including high volume combined with quality standards, commitment for the entire life-cycle of a product, stable financial situation and insurance for potential quality campaigns, may be significant entry barriers for domestic manufacturers.
The authors aim at revealing what is the contemporary position of indigenous suppliers in the supply chains of the automotive industry in Poland. The main effort is to identify the position and competences of domestic suppliers in terms of the complexity and value-added of the components supplied. The answer is sought through the comprehensive analysis of all the suppliers with the ISO/TS 16949 quality certificates in Poland, which are the standard requirement in the sector now. The quantitative analysis of the product and firm characteristics allows to capture the position of various groups of suppliers and is a preliminary step for the in-depth study of factors and barriers behind the entry and upgrading of domestic automotive component manufacturers in the European and global supply chains.
