The thesis specifically explores the case of Sweden, but analyzes this development within its wider European economic, regulatory and environmental policy context.

Richard F. Doner, Gregory W. Noble and John Ravenhill, will draw on their recently published book – The Political Economy of Automotive Industrialization in East Asia (Oxford University Press, 2021 https://global.oup.com/academic/product/the-political-economy-of-automot...)

Through a study of the automotive industries in seven East Asian countries—China, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Thailand— the talk will address the question of what makes for successful industrial upgrading, the process through which domestic firms acquire the capabilities to move into higher value-added activities at global levels of efficiency. The authors distinguish between two stylized but analytically useful levels of growth: extensive and intensive. In some countries, automotive industrialization has involved extensive growth, consisting largely of vehicle and components assembly and, in some cases, exports, primarily under the aegis of foreign producers operating in global value chains. In contrast, intensive growth occurs when local value added increases as a consequence of inputs from national producers, in turn resting on improvements in national technical capabilities. Their seven cases provide us not just with a mix of strategies but also variance in success. They explore the reasons for success and failure, and why some countries chose to make the investments required to successfully pursue an intensive strategy. Their focus is on the role of institutions specific to the automotive development strategy, and the political origins of these institutions.

Since 2008, while the global automotive manufacturing has been faltering, the Chinese auto industry has been swiftly transformed into the largest producer in the world. The growth of the Chinese automakers is a close reflection of the Chinese manufacturing economy, and Geely Auto is one such best example. The Seminar will be based on the book Geely Drives Out. The Rise of the New Chinese Automaker in the Global landscape, by Hua Wang, Giovanni Balcet and Wenxian Zhang, World Scientific, 2021.

Tommaso Pardi présentera un travail en cours sur l’évolution de la réglementation européenne des émissions de CO2 dans le secteur automobile et ses impacts sur la transformation de l’offre automobile, et notamment son électrification. Il s’agira de comprendre à la fois la manière dont cette réglementation a été façonnée à Bruxelles par différents intérêts et groupes de pression, et ses conséquences concrètes sur l’offre automobile.

Nadine Leclair began her career at Sligos as a research engineer before joining Renault in 1984 as a CAD engineer.
She was appointed Manager of VP Body-in-white Engineering in 1999, a position she held until 2005, when she became Technical Manager (CVE) for the Mégane Range. She was appointed in 2008 Vice President, Vehicle Engineering product & production engineering functions. She became Senior Vice President, Engineering Project on June 2013. Since April 2015, Nadine Leclair was Senior Vice President and Expert Fellow. She has retired from the Renault group in mid 2020 and is now President of FISITA.
