Monaco, L., & Schröder M. (2026).  Emerging Auto Industries in a World of Global Value Chains: Actors, Policies, and Structural Issues. Palgrave Studies of Internationalization in Emerging Markets (PSIEM). 339.

This book provides a global picture of automotive industry development in emerging countries through the lens of global value chain analysis. Over the past two decades, auto production increasingly shifted to emerging economies, marking a significant reconfiguration of the global auto industry. This volume traces such shift to illustrate industrial development dynamics, focusing on new global players, their industrial strategies and on the structural characteristics of these emerging markets. It features chapters devoted to the theoretical analysis of industrial development in emerging countries, and collects a wide range of country cases illustrating different trajectories of auto industrialisation. These include better-known cases of dominant players as well as still underexplored cases such as Argentina, Hungary, Poland, Morocco, South Africa, Thailand and Vietnam. This book will provide valuable reading to those researching globalization and emerging countries, their comparative industrialisation, and the intersection of government policies and business strategy, specifically concerning the automotive industry.

Hommage

Jetin, B. (2015).  Global Automobile Demand - Major Trends in Mature Economies; Volumes 1 and 2. (Pardi, Tommaso, Bernard Jullien, Blöcker, Antje, Hildermeier, Julia, Köhler, Holm-Detlev, Calleja Jimenez, Jose Pablo, Holger Bungsche, Chung, Myeong-Kee, Elena Starostenkova, Duruiz, Lale, Erdem, Orhan, Mario Sergio Salerno, Glauco Arbix, De Toledo, Demetrio, Alvarez, Lourdes, Wang, Hua, Biswajit Nag, Techakanont, Kriengkrai, Leelahanon, Sittisak, Chandran, V. G. R., Ed.).

Global Automobile Demand is a two-volume work analysing the impact of the Great Recession and the structural factors which shape automobile demand in developed and emerging countries. Geography, demographics, local culture, public policies, and the existence or the absence of a strong local automobile industry are obvious candidates to explain the peculiarities of national automobile demands and these factors are examined in the book. However, there are also some common factors specific to the demand side that need to be inquired: the evolution of household income, the persistence of poverty in some emerging countries or the return of poverty in some developed countries, and the growing inequalities observed in both developed and emerging countries. The authors explore the significance of income, poverty and inequality to analyse automobile demand and to examine the major trends in the type of vehicles preferred by consumers, as well as the respective importance of new and used vehicle markets.

The first volume of Global Automobile Demand examines the automobile demand in mature economies: the USA, the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Japan and Korea.

The second volume of Global Automobile Demand examines the automobile demand in the BRICS and other emerging countries: Brazil, Russia, India, China, Turkey, Mexico, Thailand and Malaysia.
