Biography of Jorge Carrillo
Sociologist, director of research Colegio de la Frontera Norte, Department of Social Studies, Tijuana.
- Born in 1954, Professor Carrillo passed away unexpectedly in 2026.
- 1974-1978. Bachelor’s degree on Sociology, obtained from the Faculty of Political Sciences and Sociology, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) with a Bachelor Thesis (In Spanish) with the title “Women workers in the maquiladora industry: the case of Ciudad Juárez”, 456 pages. It was financed with a grant of the Interamerican foundation and published in 1985 with Alberto Hernández.
- 1979-1981: Master’s Degree on Latin-American Studies, obtained from post-graduate studies, Faculty of Political Science and Sociology, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) Master thesis (in Spanish) with the title “Two decades of trade unionism in the maquiladora industry: the cases of Tijuana, Ciudad Juárez and Matamoros”, 180 pages, published in 1993 with Jorge Santibañez.
- 1982-1985. Full-time Researcher in the new Colegio de la Frontera Norte after having worked as project researcher in the Colegio de México (federal research institution) to study the creation of a Center for transborder studies.
- 1985-1988-1993. PhD on Social Science, specialized in Sociology, obtained from the Center for Sociological Studies, El Colegio de México, with a doctoral dissertation (in Spanish) with the title “Ford in Mexico: Industrial restructuring and the changes in industrial relations”, 666 pages, published in 1994. Grants awarded by the National Council for Science and Technology (CONACYT), University of Texas at Austin and Colegio de Mexico.
- 1989-1990. Co-founder (researcher and secretary-general ad interim 1985) and director of the Department of Social Studies of the Colegio de la Frontera Norte.
- 1990-1991-1992. General academic director of the Colegio de la Frontera Norte and promotion (1993) to Researcher Level I of the National System of Research.
- 1992-1994. Visiting researcher in Madrid at the Institute of Economy and Geography of the Spanish High Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) and in Paris at the Institut des Hautes Etudes de l’Amérique latine (IHEAL).
- 1993-2025. Member of the International Steering Committee of GERPISA.
- 1993-2025. Founding member and Vice-President (2007-2010) of ALAST (Latin-American Association of Labor Sociology, Colombia),
- 1996-2026. Founding member of the AMET (Mexican Association of Labour Studies) and treasurer (1998-2000).
- 1997-1998. Visiting researcher at the University of Tokio (Japan Society for the Promotion of Sciences); senior researcher at the Chair Pierre Naville, Department of Sociology, Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana- Itztapalapa.
- 1999-2003. Promotion to Researcher Level II of the National System of Research and second term as director of the Department of Social Studies of the Colegio de la Frontera Norte.
- 2002 and 2005. Researcher P3, United Nations Center for Latin America (CEPAL), Mexico.
- 2005. Promotion to Researcher Level III of the National System of Research.
- 2005-2026. Partner member of the Inter-University Research Centre on Globalisation and Work (CRIMT), Canada.
- 2006. Secretary general of the Trade Union of Researchers and Professors of the Colegio de la Frontera Norte.
- 2008. Guest Researcher, Study Program USA-Mexico, University of California San Diego (UCSD).
- 2009-2015. Third term as director of the Department of Social Studies of the Colegio de la Frontera Norte.
- 2010-2013. Member of the Commission of evaluators in Social Sciences of the National System of Research.
- 2015-2018. Member of the Steering Committee of the Mexican Network on Innovation and Work in the Mexican Automotive Industry (ITIAM).
- 2015. Prize for Science and Technology of the State of Lower California (Mexico) for applied research and innovative solutions in social matters, awarded by the State Council of Science and Technology from Lower California.
- 2016. Guest Professor at the Institute for Research on Labor and Employment (IRLE), University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) funded by CONACYT.
- 2016. Co-organiser of the 24th GERPISA colloquium in Puebla (Mexico).
- 2017. Reward by his contribution to the development and consolidation of Labour Studies in Mexico, Mexican Association for Labour Studies (AMET)
- 2021-2026. Emeritus Professor, Colegio de la Frontera Norte.
