Tribute to Jorge Carrillo. Martin Schröder

I first met Jorge at Gerpisa's Kyoto Colloquium in 2014. It was just a very brief encounter, but he was very kind and shared helpful comments and suggestions for future research. 

The next time I met him was at the 2017 Colloquium, more precisely in front of the train station close to Cachan where I trying to figure out the way the campus. He somehow remembered me and proposed to walk together because he knew the way. On that walk, Jorge was very curious about my research on ASEAN's (or better Vietnam's) automobile industry and asked many useful questions. It was very encouraging that an experienced and highly productive researcher like Jorge took not only interest in my work but also freely shared suggestions and his experience. His work on regionalisation of the auto industry was very influential on my own thinking and understanding of this issue.

Jorge's biggest influence on my work was that he was frequently suggesting to just take initiative to pursue research interests and ideas with other Gerpisa members. For me, such encouragement was vital to start to collaborate with Lorenza (Monaco) and to lean on the Gerpisa network to work collaboratively, even without any dedicated funding or infrastructure, because the network provided an intellectual infrastructure, and more importantly community.

My last interaction with Jorge was during a project on digitalisation in various industries in ASEAN and Latin America. Somehow, the organisers could not find someone to cover the Latin American auto industry, so Lorenza and I suggested to approach Jorge. Of course, he joined together with Francisco Octavio Lopez but he unfortunately passed away during the project. I sincerely hope to see the results of this project, because the question how technology affects work and workers was something that Jorge cared about.
