Tribute to Jorge Carrillo. Tommaso Pardi

We lose an outstanding and extremely prolific researcher. Jorge was a pillar of our community.
Tommaso Pardi (CNRS, director of Gerpisa)

It is with deep emotion and great sadness that I have learned of the sudden death of our good friend and colleague Jorge Carrillo Viveros on 1 February 2026.

Professor Emeritus of the Department of Social Studies at El Colegio de la Frontera Norte in Mexico, Jorge was a pillar of our community. He joined the Gerpisa network in 1993 and ever since he was a member of its international steering committee. He never missed an international colloquium and his contributions to Gerpisa's collective books, actes and seminars are countless.

We lose an outstanding and extremely prolific researcher. He was a pioneer in the study of the maquiladora export industry in Mexico. His studies on the transformations of work, employment and corporate organisations in the automotive sector are widely recognised in Mexico and abroad. He was a truly global scholar. He published 17 books (edited 30), 177 book chapters and 94 scientific articles in Spanish, English, German, Portuguese, Italian, French, Chinese, and Japanese.

Jorge had a contagious passion for rigorous and ambitious research. Many of us hold lovely memories of how supportive and helpful he was during our PhD and early careers. He was also a great companion in research trips and factory tours and it is difficult to imagine that we will not share anymore his kind good-humoured smile.

We will do our best to remember Jorge during our next international colloquium in Paris and beyond.

Our sincerest thoughts go out to his family, loved ones and all his friends and colleagues.
