Résumé:

This paper appraises state policy responses to the economic and financial crisis in relation to the British car industry, assessing both macroeconomic and microeconomic measures applied to the economy as a whole and policies specifically tailored to this sector. The appraisal is informed by the peculiar characteristics of Britain’s car industry, characterised by the absence of any remaining indigenously owned volume producers. In the course of the appraisal we consider questions of competitiveness and structure, encountering en route a number of major industry and industry policy debates, and speculating on the looming difficulties of further crises in the international economy.
