Hommage à Michel Freyssenet. Jorge Carrillo

Michel was a real intellectual
Jorge Carrillo, El Colegio de la Frontera Norte

Dear friends and colleagues, It is with great sadness that I received the news that my friend and colleague Michel FREYSSENET (78) passed away on 22nd January 2020. It was well-known that Michel had problems with his heart, but he was so full of energy, and with a very active and lucid mind that this was a very unexpected and heartbreaking announcement.

Michel was a real intellectual, and his departure is not only a significant loss for the GERPISA network, which he co-founded, but also for the international community of sociology studies, a field in which he became a considerable influence. His excellent work on the automobile industry’s productive models accounts for more than 50% of his close to 4000 citations. The Productive Models was one of his best-selling books, co-authored with Robert BOYER, which was translated into five languages and influenced a large number of working papers, books, research articles, academic theses, and academic discussions. Michel had a critical perspective, which characterized him during his career. He was open to debate ideas, always committed to academic research, and was consistently supportive of his peers’ work with a humbleness very proper of him.

Several years ago, when I received an invitation to be part of the GERPISA network, Michel was of great support, as an intellectual father figure. We tried together to build a GERPISA-Mexico network. He always kindly accepted our invitations to give lectures, conferences, seminars, and workshops in Mexico, as well as to discuss paper drafts. On a personal level, I had the opportunity to share time apart from work with him and Elsie. He was always positive, happy, friendly, and participatory. He was not only a great colleague but, most importantly, a splendid person, and there is no doubt that he will be miss dearly.

Rest in peace, my dear friend,
