Résumé:

The aim of this study is to provide an overview of the evolution of division of labor in research activity between carmakers and suppliers over the last two decades. Through the analysis of the industry patenting activity over the period 1990-2010, the study relates and compares OEMs’ knowledge bases to industry suppliers’ in order to detect how the accumulation of technological capabilities has evolved with the increasing diffusion of an open innovation model within the automotive industry.
