Résumé:

This chapter extends and contextualizes the examination of the trend toward vertical disintegration outlined in Chapter 4. On the one hand, it locates the problem of vertical disintegration historically and outlines the way in which scholarly analysis of disintegrated production systems has evolved. On the other hand, the chapter also places the trend toward vertical disintegration in a global context, examining the dispersal of value chains and the impact of spatial dispersal on firm and regional strategies in developed and developing countries.
