Urban mobility as the product of a systemic change

 Mobility in a so densely interconnected world is a right, so what economic processes should deliver is mobility; the means to achieve it are by products of those processes. We are and we will live more and more in urban environments where this right is questioned by the simple fact that, in a so complex environment, mobility cannot be achieved but systemically. The first actual problem in the real world, therefore, and the goal of this paper is to explore which kind of systemic changes are needed in urban environments to effectively implement the right to mobility.

The first parte of the paper analyse the problem comparing the opposite concepts of universal and idiosyncratic patterns of systemic changes in an urban context. The main thesis is that there will be many different paths to urban mobility. It depends on the degree of the functional integration of the specific urban area in the wider geographical context as well as on the physical layout of a specific urban area.
The second part of the paper will analyse the role of an “urban mobility platform” as a key part of urban planning, including the role of Infomobility and “smart vehicles”.
The third part will analyse the segmentation of the design and production of new urban vehicles and the overall effect on the automobile industry introducing the concept of a portfolio of solutions.
The final part will draft some tentative future scenarios of urban mobility in Europe.
