For 21 years Automotive News has recognized innovation in the supply chain through the PACE Award. Here we analyze the 503 finalists and 201 awardees, who are evaluated on the extent of innovation, market uptake and importance for the industry. Our findings highlight the central role of suppliers in bringing new technology to the industry, the importance of technology roadmaps for coordinating across the supply chain, and the role of systematized innovation, enabled by advances in materials science, sensors and engineering tools, and responding to the demands of consumers for beautiful machines and regulators for lower emissions, better safety and greater fuel efficiency.
