Gerpisa colloquium, Paris (2013)Abstract:
Park and Ride (P+R) has emerged as a key element of the sustainable mobility packages of many urban areas in Europe. The present article explores the introduction of P+R as an innovative niche solution alongside a regime dominated by the private car, concentrating on the potential transformative impact of P+R on urban mobility in two of the densest European states, the UK and the Netherlands. Rather than focussing on technical and operational characteristics of P+R facilities, we address the social and political context in which this practice emerges and develops.
