Events among patents: an eventful narrative in automotive industry

Abstract
Patents indicates intellectual property, the kind of technology it presents and which industry it represents. Analyzing the content, not just from one patent but organizing a big data of patents per year, we could observe a very powerful history flowing and making an eventful narrative of perspectives, “as the philosopher Paul Ricoeur argued so forcefully in his magisterial work Time and Narrative , all historical narratives entail employment decisions about beginnings , middles, and ends, the gathered form and force of events necessarily play a major role in them.”(WAGNER-PACIFICI, p.05), with regard to the automotive industry narrative there are a analyzable history, with a flow of events, some chronological sense, but also a philosopher structure and time, a rational in the flow, something like what Robin Wagner-Pacifici calls ongoing events, it means, events keep happening and they aren’t just a fixed point, they has its ongoing flow.
The main question here is: can we find events among patent data? This question aims to study an arrangement of eventful narrative about technology in automotive industry, a historiography perspective linked to Long Duration structure (BRAUDEL, 1965), looking for technologies concepts, who are embracing them, how they are connected, how connect companies, and how all this scenario behaves along the time and space in each context and conditions, among contingent events, nature events and structure actions.
Considering an event, a forming concept, Robin Wagner-Pacifici, treat this term like a fundamental element, which has forms as contingent ruptures, shapes, and flows. To the author, the events are what transform the world and they are unpredictable. However, analyze the trajectory of events is possible, once it is history and ongoing. She also brings the perspective of spaces, not only geographical or fixture, but also metaphorical, “[…] it is analytically crucial to hold together the sense of a ground as both a space literal and metaphorical of incipient eruptions, births, and innovations and a space of return, death, and desuetude.” (WAGNER-PACIFICI, p.46). The ground, which events raise off and take forms. It is important to say that this idea of ground is treated with the sense of conditions and context, for example, unmarkable or habitual, possible with normative or norm attributed and political points, in any case, an analysis of events make us notice the ground. Another point about events is action. The attribution of act, aim to a sense of a performatives, demonstratives, and representations elements, all linked to the Wagner-Pacifici’s political semiosis model “[…] for tracking the contingent ruptures, shapes, and flows of events.” (WAGNER-PACIFICI, p.03). Shows us a theory model to interpreter and to analyze a case of events.
There are three basic features of political semiosis -- a performative feature, a demonstrative feature, and a representational feature. They work together to shape and mobilize events. […] But it is important to note that there is no logic to the order in which they appear […]. They are uniquely and contingently activated by event subjects in any given case […]. (WAGNER-PACIFICI, p.19)
For Pacifici, events are traceable once they assume political semiosis forms, in a demonstrative feature we can see relations of situation and context of an event, in demonstrative linguistic, there is pronouns and adverbs of time and place, which shows a semiosis process of positions of actors, acts, spaces and times, if we take a look in the information of each patent, there is origin of year, of place and the assignee, which means, we can situate each patent in time, place and who. Representational form “[…] draws from theories of mimesis and on the circulatory power of the copy, reiterating an event or identity across time and space.” (WAGNER-PACIFICI, p.26), in this case of patents data, a strong possibility in verifying representational form makes presence in the citation mechanism of patents, which leader us to the third political semiosis form, the performative. Changes in the social identities, destinies and relations (WAGNER-PACIFICI, p.20) are performed by speech acts pointed in right actors, places, times, attitudes and processes, all these make a performative form of event.
Method
For the patent data we used Derwent source. Extracting one thousand most cited patents from each year (1995-2016), by the CPC (Cooperative Patent Classification) B60, a code for all automotive technologies, taking the patent origin/priority year, origin/priority place, abstract and assignee. Using KHCoder (open software of semantic network) and NodeXL, to make the data analysis by semantic and social networks, once “[…] complex networks prove to be ordering principles related to their structural topologies.’’ (CALDEIRA; THIERRY; ANDRADE; NEME; MIRANDA, 2008, p.01), and putting ordered principles in time sense, demonstrated to be interesting in analyzing information’s for political semiosis. To see how the components and context relate themselves, we made some coding rules to the text analysis, for example, “Hybrid_vehicle” (HEV), “Plug-in_hybrid_vehicle” (Plug-in_HEV), “Electric_vehicle” (EV), “Conneted_drive”, “Autonomous_drive”, etc.
Preliminary conclusions
In 1995-1999 was observed an ongoing history events, showing a representational sense from the performative political events of low carb emissions in the sustainability discourse that began to gain performativity in the 1970s.
In 2000 there is an interesting event emerging, a sense of wireless in automotive begin to appear, apparently, already together with the idea of connected vehicle.
In 2000-2016 there is what we could see in 1995-1999, an ongoing history events. About 2000-2004, a rupture concept took place, the technology logic, since 2004, that became strongly invested was the robotic sense. What we see here is a very strong investment in hybrid vehicle and electrical vehicle as a competition, a shot in the plug-in vehicle and in second plan, a potential performative ground to robotic industry.
